According to one research study published in 2011: "it takes a long time to move basic scientific ideas to practice," which may have the potential to impact health outcomes.

These researchers found that it can take anywhere between 17 and 24 years for new scientific discoveries to enter day-to-day clinical practice. Even with that time lag, only 14-50% of new discoveries are actually used in the relevant population.
